es, a few viruses have been made which could class as “helpful”, such as Cruncher, KOH, Wifatch, Cheese, MacMag, Brain, Stuxnet and Poly-A. There is one virus which was licenced for development by the Japanese government. The actions of an unnamed virus were legally deemed to have served a good cause by a US court. There is also a fictional computer virus called Noah, and a virus hoax called Goodtimes.

Here are more details:

Viruses that improve a system

1. Name: Wifatch (aka Zollard and Reincarna) OS: Linux Type: Year: 2014 Author: “The White Team”

Wifatch compromises routers and other Internet of Things devices and appears to try and improve infected devices’ security. The program replicates viral behaviour, scanning the web for vulnerable devices and then using security loopholes to infect them - but once it gains a foothold on a device, Wifatch doesn't take advantage of its position to form botnets or steal data. Instead, it downloads and installs software updates which prevent future infections.

Symantec has identified more than 10,000 routers infected by Wifatch since 2014.

The threat author left a comment in the source code that references an email signature used by software freedom activist Richard Stallman. A group calling itself “The White Team” claimed they are the authors, and published the source code for Linux. The developers further claim the project was never meant to be a secret, but they didn’t make its existence known earlier to avoid unwanted attention, particularly from malware authors. However, now that everyone knows about Wifatch, they have decided to release the source code under the GNU General Public License.

2. Name: Cheese OS: Linux Type: Worm Year: 2001 Author: ?

This internet worm replicates between systems that were previously hacked by the “Ramen” Linux worm (and not the "Lion" or "Adore" worms as it is stated in other various descriptions, or the worm itself). "Cheese" will also act as a "security patch" that removes the backdoors added by previous attacks, but it will not remove or patch the vulnerabilities used to hack the respective systems; thus, the machines will still remain vulnerable to the original attack(s) used to compromise them. It is not considered harmful, but it is a misguided attempt to address a security issue.

Comments inside the code for the worm spell out its friendly intent: “removes rootshells running from /etc/inetd.conf after a l10n infection... (to stop pesky haqz0rs messing up your box even worse than it is already). This code was not written with malicious intent. Infact, it was written to try and do some good.”

3. Name: Cruncher OS: DOS Type: Worm Year: 1993 Author: ?

Designed to save disk space by compressing files.

4. Name: KOH OS: DOS Type: Worm Year: 1993 Author: Mark A. Ludwig

Mark Ludwig's KOH virus tried to win the title of a 'good virus' by encrypting hard drive data. This is a boot virus developed in 1993. It uses te IDEA cipher to encrypt the disk, and asks user to type in a password. Its goal is to protect users’ data. Mark Ludwig popularized the idea in his book in 1995, “ The little black book of computer viruses”. Unfortunately, dozens of variants of the KOH virus are available today.

Did you mean, who was the first one to discover the first ever virus?

Two scientists contributed to the discovery of the first virus, Tobacco mosaic virus. Ivanoski reported in 1892 that extracts from infected leaves were still infectious after filtration through a Chamberland filter-candle. Bacteria are retained by such filters, a new world was discovered: filterable pathogens. However, Ivanovski probably did not grasp the full meaning of his discovery. Beijerinck, in 1898, was the first to call 'virus', the incitant of the tobacco mosaic. He showed that the incitant was able to migrate in an agar gel, therefore being an infectious soluble agent, or a 'contagium vivum fluidum' and definitively not a 'contagium fixum' as would be a bacteria. Ivanovski and Beijerinck brought unequal but decisive and complementary contributions to the discovery of viruses. Since then, discoveries made on Tobacco mosaic virus have stood out as milestones of virology history.

Ask more, James! Surely, this topic is very interesting.

James is right. It's a popular myth. people like conspiracies but that doesn't happen in practice. The fa
ct is that although the researchers within the companies cooperate with each other, the companies themselves are competit
ive and will do just about anything to stab each other in the back so long as doing so doesn't harm their own image
. if a company did create viruses they would not be able to keep it secret (because employees regularly go from one company to another) and their competitors would roast them in the court of public opinion.

beyond that, however, most malware these days isn't even viral. most are trojans designed for criminal purposes. there is a lot of money to be made in cybercrime and thus there's no need for anti-virus companies to make the malware themselves or even to pay others to do it.
