Obviously no one wants to infect their computer just to make sure their antivirus scanner is properly working. The steps below help you create an EICAR test virus that will assure you your antivirus program is working by finding the test virus and deleting it.

When a computer virus infects a computer, it must make changes to files on your computer, critical areas like the Registry, or sections of memory to spread or damage the computer. An antivirus program protects a computer by monitoring all file changes and the memory for specific virus activity patterns. When these known or suspicious patterns are detected, the antivirus warns the user about the action before they are performed. Below is a list of the different forms of virus detection an antivirus can use to protect your computer.

There are a number of different antivirus programs on the market. If an antivirus is already installed on your computer and you want to install a different antivirus on the computer, you must uninstall the current antivirus program first.

No. We highly recommend that only one antivirus program be installed on your computer. If you're dissatisfied with the antivirus program you currently have installed we suggest that it be uninstalled, and a new antivirus program installed. Having more than one antivirus on the computer can cause many different issues. Often the most common issue being a confliction between the different antivirus programs causing your computer to become unprotected.

After any antivirus scanner has been installed in a computer, it will be loaded into the computer's memory each time the computer boots. Loading the antivirus program into memory helps protect your computer at all times, from any threat.

When any program loads itself into memory, including an antivirus program, it will consume some of the total memory available to the computer. If your computer does not have lots of memory or is already low in memory, this can affect the overall performance of the computer.

No. Antivirus companies know the risks involved when dealing with computer viruses and the potential dangers of viruses getting out in the wild. The whole concept of antivirus companies creating viruses is a myth, urban legend, and a conspiracy theory.

If your computer is infected with a virus, formatting or erasing the hard drive and starting over will almost always remove any virus. However, keep in mind if backups of your computer have been made that contain a virus, your computer can be re-infected if not protected by an antivirus program.

Reading an e-mail message will not infect your computer with a virus or other malware. Computer viruses, trojans, and other malware infects your computer when an e-mail attachment is ran from an e-mail.

How to install an antivirus program on a computer.
1
Understand the need for an antivirus program. Windows is the most virus-prone operating system (OS) out of the three major OSes. It has the most users and the weakest built-in security. Antivirus programs will defend your computer from malware that comes through email, flash drives, downloads, websites and more.

2
Acquire an antivirus program. There are several popular free options available that do a good job of protecting the average user. These programs are updated frequently with new virus definitions that recognize the latest threats.
If you frequently deal with files or websites that are virus-infected, you may want to opt for more powerful paid protection. Paid antivirus programs are typically available for a yearly subscription fee.
When downloading free or paid antivirus programs, ensure that you are downloading from a trusted source. There are many programs out there that claim to be antivirus/antimalware but instead install malware themselves. Read reviews and download products from companies that have been around for a long time.
Windows 10 and 8 have Windows Defender, which is a free anti-malware application provided by Microsoft. It's already built-in.

3
Install the antivirus program. Make sure that no other programs are running while you install the antivirus. You will most likely need to be connected to the internet to download additional files and updates.
Some free antivirus programs come packaged with toolbars for your web browser. These can add protection but also change your search options and bog down older computers. You have the opportunity to opt out of these changes during the installation process.

4
Update the program. After the installation is complete, reboot your computer and update the program. The file that you downloaded is likely not the most up to date version, so you will need to connect to your antivirus program’s servers and download the latest updates. Most antivirus programs allow you to right-click on the icon in the System Tray while it is running and click Update.
Update your definitions on a weekly basis. Most antivirus programs are set to automatically update. Double check the settings for your program to ensure that you are receiving the necessary updates.

5
Scan your computer. Once you have the program installed and updated, it’s time to scan your computer. This could take several hours, depending on the number of files being scanned and your computer’s speed.

6
Set a scan schedule. Antivirus programs are most effective when they are automated. Open your antivirus program’s settings and look for the Schedule option. Try to schedule a time when your computer will be on but you won’t be using it. Ideally you should be scanning once a week; scan more frequently if you deal with potentially infected files on a regular basis.

7
Keep Windows updated. The best way to keep your computer protected is to always make sure that your copy of Windows is up to date. Microsoft releases security updates for Windows on a regular basis, fixing exploitable areas of Windows.

A quick scan checks common areas for computers viruses. Scanned areas can include the computer memory and common areas of the hard drive, including the temporary Internet files and the operating system directory. Typically a quick scan takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
A full scan checks every area of the computer, including memory, hard drives and sometimes any external devices connected to the computer, like external hard drives and USB flash drives. Because the full scan checks everything, it takes longer to perform the scan. Depending on how much memory and hard drive space a computer has, it could take 30 minutes to several hours to complete a full scan.
If time permits, a full scan is the best option to choose when checking if the computer has viruses. Some viruses can hide in less common areas on a computer, and a quick scan may not detect the virus.

Besides viruses, what are other types of destructive programs are there?

- WORMS

o WORMS ARE CONSTRUCTED TO INFILTRATE LEGITIMATE DATA PROCESSING PROGRAMS AND ALTER OR DESTROY THE DATA (E.G., ILLICIT BANK FUNDS TRANSFER)

o WORMS DO NOT REPLICATE THEMSELVES (WORMS ARE LIKE A BENIGN TUMOR, VIRUSES LIKE MALIGNANT ONES)

o WORM’S CHANGES MAY CONTINUE IN EFFECT AFTER WORM IS DESTROYED UNLESS CORRECTED

- TROJAN HORSES

o TROJAN HORSES ARE DESTRUCTIVE PROGRAMS THAT HAVE BEEN DISGUISED, OR CONCEALED IN, AN INNOCUOUS PIECE OF SOFTWARE (VIRUS OR WORM MAY BE WITHIN TROJAN HORSE)

o CAN BE IN GAMES, GRAPHICS)

o TROJAN HORSES DO NOT REPRODUCE THEMSELVES AND SPREAD

o USED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT AND INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE – OFTEN DESIGNED NOT TO BE DISCOVERED

- LOGIC BOMBS

o LOGIC BOMBS ARE SIMILAR TO A TROJAN HORSE, BUT ARE SET TO GO OFF AT A PARTICULAR DATE AND TIME (CAN BE DELAYED A LONG TIME)

o LOGIC BOMBS DO NOT REPRODUCE

o OFTEN DESIGNED TO DO MAXIMUM DAMAGE

o OFTEN USED BY DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEES, E.G., WHEN THEIR NAME IS REMOVED FROM PAYROLL RECORDS

o CAN BE USED TO HOLD SOFTWARE “HOSTAGE” UNTIL A RANSOM IS PAID. ALSO “INSURANCE” FOR PAYMENT TO COMPUTER SYSTEM SUPPLIERS OR CONSULTANTS

greymarkb wrote:
How are viruses transmitted?
1. Opening attachments or links from unknown or spoofed emails

note: shown above are two examples of how viruses can often appear as legitimate messages, but are designed to trick the computer user.

This is one of the most common ways of getting infected with a virus or ransomware. E-mails are spoofed to look legitimate and contain an attachment or link that will infect your machine when clicked on. These spoofed emails are crafted so well these days that even a seasoned professional can be thrown off guard if not careful! Make sure you pay attention to the details before you open or click on anything.

2. Downloading software from malicious sites

When your computer gets infected with a virus, it’s common for someone to joke and say, “What kind of questionable files were you downloading?” It’s a common misconception that viruses only come from inappropriate or problematic websites, but viruses are a danger everywhere on the internet. Even if you're downloading software from a trusted source, there are still traps that can infect your computer.

For example, a user wants to download the Google Chrome browser and clicks on the link. The link provides the Google Chrome download file, which the user installs successfully. Unbeknownst to the user, the download package was injected with a virus and the computer is now infected (this problem actually occurs very often).

3. Online Ads

Malicious online ads, also known as Malvertising, is just another way your computer can get a virus without any realization or traceable evidence. Criminals often place clean ads on trusted websites and leave them in place for a while to gain credibility. After some time passes they put a malicious code in the ad that infects your computer when clicked on.

4. Social media

People are generally more relaxed about clicking on links published on social media sites and links shared by their contacts

For example, there was a virus spreading on Facebook that infected thousands of people’s computers. This particular virus spread through a video that required a special software (plug-in) so the user could watch. The virus captured and recorded passwords used to log into your computer.

5. Unpatched software

The last topic we’ll discuss is one that most people overlook. Another way you can put your computer at risk of a virus infection is through unpatched software. Security holes unknown to software maker or antivirus vendors are also known as Zero-Day vulnerabilities. Exploits that stem from security holes affect software companies small and large, including the likes of Microsoft, Apple and Google.

During March 2013, Oracle released emergency patches to Java, a popular plugin used to view content on browsers and applications because of a vulnerability that allowed hackers to exploit computers without minimal barriers of entry.
